Intent

Science is the most powerful tool by which to nurture children’s curiosity! At Yew Tree Community School, we endeavour to provide a high-quality science education that incorporates unique strategies providing children with the foundations they need to recognise the importance of science in every aspect of their life. We want our children to appreciate how science has impacted on the lives of human beings and know that it is vital to the world’s future prosperity. Indeed, as part of our exciting curriculum, we aim to provide opportunities for our pupils to apply their learning to a real-life context for example in the form of our Science Garden-here they use their knowledge of plants to grow their own fruit and vegetables.  

 

Implementation

As part of implementing the science curriculum, teachers must first refer to the ‘ science curriculum overview’ which maps out the key science learning from Reception all the way to Year 6.  They then use creative, multisensory teaching approaches to ensure all children can access the core skills and knowledge of the curriculum. Some of these approaches include the following:

 

Science Action Dictionary

This strategy allows all pupils to understand and remember key vocabulary through the use of actions.

 

In addition to the above, teachers also incorporate low stake quizzes within a carefully planned sequence of lessons, so children can recall and embed key learning through a fun, game format.

 

Science and the Community

At Yew Tree Community School, we understand the importance of including our local community in the teaching and learning of science within our school. Therefore, each year-in addition to the weekly sessions-we dedicate a whole week to a fun -packed Science Week. As part of this, we welcome parents, carers, members of the community to share their love of science with our children!

STEM Speakers from the Community

We create opportunities for member of our community (brothers, sisters, parents -even grandparents) who have worked in a STEM (Science Technology Engineering Maths) occupation to come and inspire our future scientists, engineers and mathematicians! 

The Science Garden

Here, children, parents and staff plant fruit and vegetables as they apply their learning from science sessions.  As you can see, we had a 'bumper' crop with trays of potatoes, tomatoes, garlic and lettuce to mention a few!
