Computing Intent
At Yew Tree Community School, we want our children to love computing! To ensure this we provide a high-quality education and learning experience for all pupils. Content is set out showing logical progression and is systematically and explicitly taught ensuring children are able to acquire the intended knowledge and skills.
Our computing curriculum design aims to deliver the requirements of the national curriculum, and to ensure that our pupils have the digital skills they need to be good digital citizens, and to have knowledge they can build upon, at a level suitable for secondary school and into the workplace, where there are lots of opportunities to put computing skills into practise.
In order to ensure this, we want children to be computational thinkers (problem-solving with technology) being able to participate effectively and safely in the digital world. This means acquiring a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of computers and computing systems.
Computing Implementation
To help implement our computing curriculum, teachers use the Purple Mash scheme of work as a starting point for their planning, ensuring to tailor the learning for their own class.
The core skills of computer science, information technology and digital literacy, are covered throughout the year by all children.
Computer science-pupils are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work and how to put this knowledge to use through programming.
Information technology-pupils are equipped to use information technology to create programs, systems and a range of content.
Digital literacy-able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology.
E-safety
Central to our computing curriculum is E-safety. We want our children to be confident but safe members of the digital world. Currently, we use common sense education scheme to deliver e-safety lessons at the start of each half-term. In addition to this, we have a dedicated week each year for Internet safety.

EYFS and Computing
Computing is not explicitly mentioned within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) statutory framework, however as a school we provide many opportunities for our younger children to use and enjoy technology in order to solve problems and produce creative outcomes, using devices they are familiar to such as Bee Bots.
